Not a Star, Not a Rose: Episode 12

- What’s in those clear bottles?

- Seltzer. Black cherry, vanilla, orange, strawberry, peach . . .

- Strawberry, please.

- Here you go.

- Thanks. You weren’t here last week. I sorta kinda missed you.

- Heyyy, Kalmia? I feel like we need to talk.

- Heyyy, Deke? All we ever do is talk.

- Okay — but I mean . . . about something.

- Because we usually talk about nothing.

- You know — if you’re going to be like this . . .

- What do you want to talk about?

- You know the last time I mentioned Tiff?

- Tiff?

- Tiffany. Tiffany Aubri . . .

- Uh huh.

- Well . . . things are going better now.

- I see.

- We’re getting serious, I think. At least I have a good feeling about it.

- Uh . . . huh.

- You’re doing it again.

- What?

- Whenever I mention her, you go all glassy-eyed and distant.

- I’m listening to you.

- But not responding.

- What do you want to hear?

- Anything but these . . . noncommittal . . . grunts.

- Thanks a lot. That’s the second time you’ve called me a pig.

- Well —

- What do you want? After your fulfilling weekend, I asked questions. I said I was happy for you. Is anything else really my business?

- I guess not. No more than stories about your many conquests or your weird friend Cady are my business, huh?

- I didn’t realize I was telling you more than you wanted to hear. I’ll stop.

- That wasn’t what I meant! I mean, we’re friends, we tell each other things, right?

- Maybe not . . . everything.

- Okay — message received. I’ll keep the Tiff stuff private. I just thought we —

- What?

- Never mind.

- Fine.

- By the way, why are you wearing a scarf? It’s hot in here.

- This is why.

- Well, well. Anyone I know?

- Yeah. The guy who took your shift last week.

- That guy?

- Yeah, we got into this discussion . . . he told me to stick around while he was closing up . . .

- He’s not supposed to do that.

- Don’t worry, it was a one-time thing.

- It better be.

- Don’t even try to police my —

- Not you. Him. He’d better not do something like that again during closing.

- Well he won’t with me. Bartenders aren’t my type.
