Was Kirsten still her best friend? Would Kirsten still be her best friend tomorrow? Agonizing, Savanna flip-flopped in her bed.

Kirsten had apologized for ignoring her that week at summer camp. Sort of.

“Well, like,” she’d chirped, “I thought you and I needed some space from each other, y’know, just for that week. You’re supposed to make new friends at camp, right?” When Savanna only stared back, Kirsten tilted her head in defiance. “Aren’t you kind of glad, though? You should be. You met Carly.”

This was true. Carly was wonderful, even if no one but Savanna thought so. But Savanna lived in La Mesa; Carly was almost sixty miles away in Fallbrook. For two eleven-year-old girls, they might have been on opposite ends of California. They did write letters, but . . .

But anyway, Kirsten was supposed to be Savanna’s best friend. They had gone to camp together as best friends. For Kirsten to ditch Savanna on the first day for a snooty group of girls who wore bras and makeup was nothing less than betrayal. Savanna wasn’t sure she should ever trust Kirsten again.

They were starting sixth grade at the new school tomorrow, having agreed to leave the old school (which was overcrowded and had gone to a year-round-schedule) and their old best friends there. They…
