The Hyenas were now against Tabby as well, though they saved their most vicious bites for Nataly. Their steady hatred of Savanna didn’t change.

Why, Savanna wondered, had Nataly and Tabby latched onto her? Tabby consistently made it clear she thought Savanna totally uncool, and was only civil to her for Nataly’s sake. She absolutely gushed over Nataly. As for Nataly, well, it seemed she had always wanted to be nice to Savanna and now had nothing to lose, so . . .

Savanna wasn’t sure she wanted that kind of niceness.

Still, watching Kirsten and Justina continue to traipse around in their Best Friend Bubble all these months had made her lonely.

Certainly lunchtime had improved, with Robby and Trent at their table. For some reason, Savanna could be something like herself with them.

One day when the end-of-lunch bell rang, Trent pressed a folded note into Savanna’s hand, lowered his head, and sprinted for the classroom. Nataly, leaning over her shoulder, tapped the note and gasped.

“Open it, quick! He is in love with you, you know. He told me at camp when we were dancing.”

Savanna stared at her.

“Go on,” Nataly urged. “He is asking you to go out with him, I know it!”
