Dear Carly:

This might be insane, but I’ve decided to go to Leticia’s party tonight. Don’t worry, I’ll tell you absolutely everything. I really hope there isn’t TOO MUCH to tell, though.

Thank you for telling me the worst thing you ever did. That was actually pretty bad. Did anyone ever find out it was you?

Now, as I promised, I will tell you what I did to a girl named Janine. Brace yourself.

Tears fell on the page as Savanna wrote and wrote. When she finished she stood up, wiped her eyes, and smoothed out her new, unusually trendy denim dress — another one chosen by Amethyst. She would mail the letter in the morning. It was almost time to leave for Leticia’s party.

It’d been a strange day already, on that last day of school. For starters, after the bell rang, the room had absolutely erupted. There were cheers, hugs, and tearful exhortations:

“Have a good summer! Love ya!”

“I’ll miss you so much!”

“See you in seventh grade!”

“Call me! You promise?”

Kids clung together like the classroom was going to sink. Even Savanna was hugged. Stephie was the first to throw her arms around her, and then Liz, followed by Tabby, Heather, and…
